A safe start to every call
Returning callers use their Login and password. Login identifies the account; the Handle is its public name. On a public board that allows registration, a new caller chooses both and supplies the profile fields the Sysop has enabled. Private boards and registration-disabled boards offer returning login only.
D2 completes and accepts this journey. D3 then takes the caller through menus, conferences and messages. These are current-source features; the older downloadable 0.1.0 preview predates this work.
What the caller experiences
Registration validates the complete account before saving it. Mistakes can be corrected; an abandoned registration leaves no partial account. A remotely registered account does not become a Sysop. Passwords are not echoed.
The same account can own only one active session. A second login leaves the first call alone. Different accounts can use different configured nodes at the same time: here, a node means a caller connection slot, not a CircuitNET Node ID.
Time and access stay with the right call
Successful admission updates call counts. The board reserves the permitted time, accounts for actual use, and settles it once when the call ends. Goodbye, disconnects and timeouts release that call's session. Stale-session recovery handles interrupted calls without taking over a live session.
Access is checked again during the session. Disabling an account or changing its permissions does not leave stale authority available for reading or posting. Concurrent profile and preference edits cannot silently overwrite newer values.
What the Sysop sets
Choose public/private board access, new-user policy, login and registration timeouts, password length, time allowances and profile fields. Use matching current sfconfig and runtime versions for the new D2 settings. Start with a local test board and try both returning and new-user calls before inviting callers.
Real Apple Silicon Telnet acceptance exists. Intel macOS compilation passes; real Windows, BSD and Linux acceptance is not implied.

Advanced: caller policy and exact settings.
Technical reference: session ownership and safe recovery. Session custody means which live call owns the account and its reserved allowance.
